“Shoeless” Joe Jackson AKA Joseph Jefferson Jackson was born on July 16, 1887 and lived on to become a major league baseball player. Growing up in South Carolina, he wasn’t raised with much money and had to work at a young age. The nickname Shoeless was born the day he hit a triple after taking off his baseball spikes that were hurting his feet.By his early adolescence, he had already begun to excel at baseball and show his talent. During his twelve year career he played for the Philadelphia Athletics, Cleveland Naps, and finally the Chicago White Sox. As a rookie he had a batting average of .408 and was praised by some of the greatest baseball players such as Babe Ruth who credited Shoeless for Babe’s own batting skills. At the

prime of his career, the Chicago White Sox went to the World Series on multiple accounts but during the 1919 season an event known as the Black Sox Scandal demolished Jackson’s career. In the Black Sox Scandal, eight of the White Sox players threw the series against the Cincinnati Reds for a lot of money. Jackson himself was promised around 20,000$ if he let the Reds win. The White Sox coach underpaid the players which may be one of the reasons why they had done it. The Black Sock Scandal was one of the biggest scandals of the Roaring 20s, Scott Fitzgerald refers to the scandal in his renown bookGreat Gatsby.Unfortunately, this scandal led to Jackson being banned from the MLB and discontinuing his career.
