Football during the 1920s change dramatically. On August 20, 1920 in Canton, Ohio, a league known as the American Professional Football Conference was formed consisting only of Ohio League teams. A month later the name was changed to the American Professional Football Association. The name was changed one last time to the National Football League in 1922. The first president of the NFL was former football player Jim Thorpe. The league consisted of twenty-two teams that played each other and a champion was crowned at the end of the season or year.
Football was more than just a game; it was a means of entertainment for the people during the 1920s. Fans all over America gathered together to watch a game that bonded everyone together. The game of football gave fans something in life to cheer about. In 1925, the NFL gained significant increase in popularity because college football’s star, Red Grange joined the NFL. A record number of fans came to watch him play. Players such as Jim Thorpe and Red Grange changed the game forever. Their unique abilities changed football by escalating it to new heights.
The NFL did hit some bumpy roads on its way. Pro football was in a state of confusion because of rising salaries, players jumping from one team to another and the use of college players still enrolled in school. But the league started to gradually stabilize itself throughout the 1920s. Football started becoming more popular and drew larger crowds like baseball had done. The 1920s became the foundation for football.
